Before the accident, I never truly understood what it meant to live with a disability. In my mind, it was something reserved for those who were paralyzed or terminally ill.
One weekend, I attended a friend's wedding, which took place on a Saturday, followed by an afterparty that lasted into Sunday. My wife and I had to catch a red-eye flight Sunday night to get back home because we needed to be back at work on Monday. After a four-hour drive from the airport, we arrived home around 4 AM.
I went to work on Monday at 8 AM, barely rested, but I managed to take a short nap during lunch. I had hoped to leave by 5 PM, but an office emergency kept us there until 10 PM.
On my drive home that night, I unfortunately fell asleep at the wheel. My car hit the center divider on the freeway and ended up sideways in the high-speed lane. As I sat there, helpless, another car crashed into mine, hitting the driver's side where I was sitting.
I lost consciousness and later woke up in the hospital with severe leg injuries and cuts from the broken glass.
I ended up spending a month in the hospital and another month in therapy. The doctors told me that it would take about a year to regain 80-90% of my physical capacity, and that it would require hard work to get there.
During this time, I started to gain weight due to limited mobility. I didn’t want to keep gaining weight, so I adjusted my eating habits to match my reduced ability to burn calories, at least until I could move more freely again.
My wife had experience with intermittent fasting, so I decided to try it. I started with a 10-hour fasting window, then gradually increased it to 12 hours, and eventually, I’m now fasting for 16 hours daily. This change helped me manage my weight while I focused on recovering my mobility.
A year and a half later, I’m grateful I gave intermittent fasting a try—it’s now an integral part of my daily routine.
If you follow any kind of diet, make sure to balance out any nutritional gaps. For me, I take a daily "Multivitamin for Men" and a "Veggie Power" supplement to make sure I’m covering all my bases.
