Liver Disease

What are the liver disease symptoms and treatments?

Tuesday, February 20, 2020 - 05:30am

Overview

Liver disease can involve many causes, such as cancer, immune disorders, genetic changes, or infections. This disease typically progresses to a point where the liver can no longer function properly. The liver is the largest abdominal organ in your body and performs over 500 tasks. Among the most important are metabolized foods, which keep you at a healthy weight, remove toxins, expel them via urine or stool, and regulate blood sugar.

Symptoms

  • Weakness, fever, nausea, vomiting.

  • Dark urine, uncommon stool consistency, and color.

  • Pain on the right side under the ribs.

  • Jaundice, yellowing of eyes and skin.

  • Loss of appetite.

  • Tendency to bruise easily.

Causes

  • Liver infection from hepatitis A, B, or C:

  1. Contaminated water or food.

  2. Been infected by another person via close contact through blood or semen.

  • Immune system disorders.

  • Inherited genetics from your parent.

  • Cancer and tumors.

  • Alcohol addiction.

  • Fatty liver disease.

  • Overuse of medications can weaken the liver.

Risk Factors

  • Alcohol addiction.

  • Living with high cholesterol.

  • Having Hepatitis.

  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals or fertilizers.

  • Obesity.

  • Been diagnosed with diabetes.

Complications

When liver disease is left untreated, the risk of developing liver cancer increases; among other liver complications is the development of liver cirrhosis. Over time, the liver cannot function properly to keep the person alive; this is known as liver failure.

Prevention

  • Avoid alcohol consumption.

  • Live a safe sex life, use condoms.

  • When deciding to have tattoos or piercings, select a clean shop.

  • Reduce over-the-counter medication intake.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Eat and drink clean food, wash your hands before eating, and select clean restaurants.

  • Stay away from chemicals.

Supplements for Liver Disease

When dealing with liver disease or vitamin deficiencies, certain supplements and vitamins can support liver health, though they should not be seen as replacements for medical treatment. Below are some common supplements and vitamins to consider:

  • Milk Thistle (Silymarin): Known for its liver-protective effects, milk thistle is often used to support liver detoxification and may help regenerate liver cells. It may help in cases of alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and cirrhosis.

  • Vitamin E: Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can reduce inflammation and may help with liver conditions like NAFLD or NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis). Reduces oxidative stress in liver cells, supporting liver function.

  • Vitamin D: Deficiency in vitamin D is common in people with liver disease. It helps with calcium absorption and immune function. Supports overall liver health, and deficiencies are linked to the progression of liver diseases.

  • Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA): ALA is a powerful antioxidant that may help detoxify the liver and reduce liver inflammation. Supports the liver in neutralizing free radicals, which can prevent liver damage. Caution: Those with diabetes should be cautious because ALA can lower blood sugar levels.

  • N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a precursor to glutathione, a potent antioxidant that helps protect the liver from oxidative stress. NAC is often used in cases of acetaminophen overdose, where it helps detoxify the liver.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil, they can help reduce inflammation in the liver and may aid in reducing fat deposits in cases of NAFLD.

  • B Vitamins (B-Complex): B vitamins, especially B12, B6, and Folate, are essential for liver health. They help in energy production and maintaining proper liver function. It can help combat deficiencies that can occur in liver disease and aid liver cell regeneration.

  • Vitamin A Deficiency: The Liver is involved in vitamin A storage and metabolism. Liver disease can result in inadequate vitamin A levels. Symptoms: Vision problems, dry skin, weakened immune system.

When to See a Doctor

If you're concerned about liver disease or suspect a deficiency, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. Here are some signs that warrant medical attention:

  • Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes (Jaundice): A common sign of liver disease, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, or bile duct obstruction.

  • Unexplained Fatigue: Severe tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest may indicate liver dysfunction.

  • Abdominal Pain or Swelling: Pain in the upper right abdomen could signal liver inflammation or a serious liver condition.

  • Dark Urine or Light-Colored Stools: These may indicate liver problems or bile obstruction.

  • Nausea, Vomiting, or Loss of Appetite: These symptoms can be linked to various liver diseases.

  • Bruising or Bleeding Easily: The liver is responsible for producing clotting factors, and impaired liver function can lead to easy bruising or bleeding.

  • Severe Itching: Itchy skin can sometimes be a symptom of liver disease, particularly cholestasis.

  • Confusion or Cognitive Changes (Hepatic Encephalopathy): This can occur when the liver is unable to properly filter toxins from the bloodstream.

Diagnostic Tests a Doctor May Perform

  • Blood Tests: Liver function tests (LFTs) to check enzyme levels, bilirubin, and other markers.

  • Imaging: Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to evaluate liver size, shape, and any abnormalities.

  • Liver Biopsy: In certain cases, a biopsy may be necessary to assess the extent of liver damage.

  • FibroScan or Elastography: A non-invasive test to measure liver stiffness, which can help assess fibrosis or cirrhosis.
